All the great cultures of the Mediterranean have left their mark on Seville. A walk through its streets reveals the history of a city that is both universal and traditional, diverse and unique. Discover Seville through its monuments and sights: Plaza de España, the Cathedral, Royal Alcázar Palace and Barrio de Santa Cruz, the old quarter.

The reddish hues of the beautiful Plaza de España provide the setting for the start of our tour of Seville. The historicist architecture dating to the 1920s introduces us to the magnificent and sumptuous beauty of this part of the city, created for the Ibero-American Exhibition held in 1929.

The Cathedral of Seville, which receives the title Magna Hispalensis, is the second largest church in the world after St Peter’s in Rome. This impressive example of the Spanish Gothic style houses a host of works of art in its chapels, including the great mausoleum of Christopher Columbus.

The cathedral’s tower is called La Giralda and is the universal symbol of Seville. The old Moorish minaret, conserved by the Christians because of its beautiful architecture, provides a breathtaking view of the city.

Barrio de Santa Cruz is the old Jewish quarter of Seville, a tangle of narrow streets lined with white houses and opening onto countless courtyards. It is the city’s most picturesque quarter, where the famous Sevillian painter Bartolomé Esteban Murillo lived in the 17th century.

In 1364 King Peter I ordered the construction of the Royal Alcázar Palace, a striking testimony to the merging of the cultures that have left their mark on Seville. The site of the palace was formerly occupied by a Roman necropolis, a Paleochristian basilica, Visigothic buildings and, lastly, a beautiful Moorish fortress. Today, the Alcázar Palace is the place where King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia of Spain stay when they visit Seville. The palace is considered a twin to the famous Alhambra Palace in Granada, with its marvellous ensemble of courtyards, Mudejar rooms and lavishly decorated halls. Its gardens are a delightful refuge from the heat and hustle and bustle of the city.
